San Diego State University has both Fall and Spring Semesters in Madrid, Spain. They offer students the opportunity to live in Madrid and study the Spanish language and culture for 13-week (Fall) and 17-week (Spring) programs at the Universidad Antonio de Nebrija. Participation in this program will provide a unique cross-cultural experience that will enrich your life.

  • Open to SDSU students in good academic standing and who have completed three semesters of college level Spanish (through Spanish 103) or equivalent
  • All courses taught by faculty from the Center for Spanish Studies (CEHI) at Antonio de Nebrija University
  • Living accommodations with Spanish-speaking families throughout Madrid
  • Students earn 12 units of SDSU resident credit toward the Bachelor's degree
  • Courses will fulfill some requirements of the SDSU Spanish minor or major
  • Financial Aid may be available to qualified SDSU students

Location
You will be enrolled at Centro de Estudios Hispanicos, a division of the Universidad Antonio de Nebrija, located in Madrid, separate from the main campus of the Universidad. (The main campus is 20 kilometers northwest of Madrid.) CEHI is designed to teach Spanish language, culture and literature to international students.

Academic Program
Classes will be taught by the faculty of the Centro de Estudios Hispanicos (CEHI), a division of the Universidad Antonio de Nebrija, which are equivalents to the SDSU classes. Class sessions are Monday through Friday in 90-minute blocks between 8:30 am and 2:30 pm.

Course Offerings
Students can earn up to 12 SDSU resident credits during this semester abroad, including the preview/orientation course. Participants must have their course selection approved by the program director in writing prior to registering. It is important that the correct sequence of courses be taken. On average, 15 Spanish courses and a few general studies courses will be available. Please contact us for the current course offerings.

Included and Optional Activities
There will be local excursions included in the program fee to some of the major attractions of Madrid, such as the Royal Palace and the Spanish Parliament, as part of the on-going academic program. CEHI staff will also organize activities for all international students at additional modest prices. These activities are great opportunities to see local films, theatres, and fiestas. The CEHI staff will help you plan and take part in these or other trips and activities.

Homestay
You will live with a Spanish-speaking family or individual during your semester in Spain. CEHI selects the host families and makes all placement arrangements. The experience and living arrangements may vary considerably from family to family. It is likely that there will be other students in the apartment, in such case you will share a double bedroom. You will have your own keys to the apartment and are free to come and go within the framework of the family rules and dynamics. Two meals daily and weekly laundry service are provided.

Airfare
Each student is responsible for making his/her own travel arrangements as airfare is not included in the program price. Please see our additional information page for discounted student airfare information.

Included in the Fee

  • Tuition costs at CEHI/Universidad Antonio de Nebrija (includes instruction, academic reports, and administrative services)
  • Complementary activities organized by the CEHI
  • Host family accommodations (two meals per day and weekly laundry)
  • Guidance and assistance of the SDSU/CES Travel Study Director and Faculty Director

Not included in the Fee

Student Visa
This program does not require a student visa for Fall semester as it is less than 90 days in length. However, if you plan to stay in Spain longer than 90 days, you must obtain a visa or leave Spain and re-enter it through a non-European Union Country. Spring semester does require a visa and it is the student's duty to obtain one. Please contact the Consulate General of Spain for more information regarding visas. The process of obtaining a visa is lengthy, so begin early. You are responsible for your immigration status.
