Katherine Schmarje

Katherine Schmarje Crockett is a lecturer for the San Diego State University Global Campus Online Degree Completion Program in Public Health. Additionally, Katherine is the data manager for the Central Valley Community Foundation (CVCF) in Fresno. Katherine earned her Bachelor of Science degree from SDSU in Health Science with an emphasis in Public Health and her Master of Public Health degree with an Epidemiology emphasis from the University of California, Davis.

Katherine is a California Epidemiologic Investigation Service (Cal-EIS) fellowship graduate. During her Cal-EIS training with Napa County Public Health, in addition to investigating childhood cancer hotspots, she worked with multiple county level departments including infectious and chronic disease epidemiology, public health emergency preparedness, and health education. She has also participated in a Community Assessment for Public Health Emergency Response (CASPER) with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). Katherine graduated from the SDSU and University of California San Diego Joint Doctoral Program (SDSU-UCSD JDP) in Global Public Health.

During her time in the SDSU-UCSD JDP, Katherine worked as a data manager for the PATH (Providing Access to HIV Care)/Ekkubo Study in Uganda and the Communities Fighting COVID! Study in San Diego. Katherine’s doctoral dissertation research focused on stigma related to HIV and mental health in the Ugandan setting. Katherine’s overall research interests include infectious disease epidemiology, HIV, maternal and child health, mental health, stigma, and health disparities.
