OF 0017.25 Personal Hygiene: A History of Cleanliness, Health, and Ritual

Exploring personal hygiene practices is essential for maintaining good health and preventing the spread of disease. Is hygiene simply about cleanliness or is it linked to religious practices? The Greeks defined hygiene as the embodiment of good health, while the French saw it as the 'art of health'. From public baths in ancient Greece, Rome, and Japan to the development of soap and the Saturday night bath as a status symbol in the 1950s, bathing has become a social construct, an obsession, and even an architectural phenomenon. This research will inspire you to examine your daily hygiene routines and their significance.

OF 0014.82 Spanish Colonial San Diego: People, Places, and Empire on La Frontera

Have you ever wondered about the Spanish roots of early San Diego and the people who established it? Who were the priests, soldiers, and craftsmen, and how did the indigenous people respond to their arrival? This lecture and field trip will explore those questions and more. You'll learn about the first mission and its location (surprisingly not in Mission Valley), and then venture to Alta California's first Catholic church on Presidio Hill to stand where those first colonists once stood. From Presidio Hill we will enjoy the breeze from the sea that carried those first colonists to our shore–at least the ones who survived the long voyage.
