San Diego Mesa College is the largest community college in the San Diego Community College District. Located in Clairemont Mesa, San Diego Mesa College opened in 1964 and offers dozens of exceptional academic programs for local students, which include Associate Degrees in Arts and Sciences and Certificates in Performance and Achievement. San Diego Mesa College also has one of the highest student transfer rates in California to four-year institutions — in 2018 alone, the College assisted nearly 2,000 students with transfer applications.

Due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, all in-person components of this program have either been paused, rescheduled, or moved into a virtual format until further notice.

With a curriculum designed by the renowned SDSU Fowler College of Business, you’ll gain a fundamental working knowledge of the business world. You’ll learn about the issues facing businesses today, and how all the different components of a business interact to contribute to the growth and success of that business in the private sector.

Admission Requirements

Below is a list of general admission requirements for the B.S. in Business Administration degree completion program.

We understand that every student's academic journey is unique, and we encourage you to contact an Admissions Advisor to find out what you'll need to successfully apply to the program.

  • Have a minimum of 60 transferable semester (or 90 quarter) units by the end of the fall term prior to spring transfer and the end of the spring term prior to fall transfer, including:
    • 27 Lower Division Preparation Course Units:
      • Accountancy 201, 202
      • Economics 101, 102
      • Finance 240 (or an approved business law course)
      • Management Information Systems 180
      • Mathematics 120 (or an approved calculus course or an approved three-unit finite mathematics course)
      • Rhetoric and Writing Studies 290
      • Statistics 119 or Economics 201
        These courses should be complete with a grade of C (2.0) or better and cannot be taken for credit/no credit (Cr/ NC)
    • Complete a minimum of 30 Units of General Education Courses
    • The Golden Four Requirement, which includes:
      • Oral Communication — complete a basic public speaking course or other communication course with a grade of "C-" or higher in at least 3 semester (or 4 quarter) units
      • Written Communication — complete a freshman composition course that emphasizes essay writing or reading and writing concurrently with a grade of "C-" or higher in at least 3 semester (or 4 quarter) units
      • Critical Thinking — complete, with a grade of "C-" or higher, a second semester composition or writing course, or a course in reasoning and effective argumentative writing
      • Mathematics — complete a mathematics course above the level of intermediate algebra with a grade of "C-" or higher in at least 3 semester (or 4 quarter) units. Mathematics 150, 151, and 252 will satisfy this requirement
  • Complete the American Institutions Requirement
    • The American Institutions requirement is designed to demonstrate that students have an understanding of American history, the United States Constitution, and California state and local government.
  • Satisfy the CSU mathematics and writing requirements
  • Have an overall 2.75+ college GPA

Your online courses are developed and delivered by expert faculty from SDSU’s School of Communication, many of whom are repeatedly recognized for their quality teaching with institutional, regional, and national teaching awards, as well as their research on communication-related topics.

Earning your Bachelor’s in Communication means that you’ll gain:

  • An ability to comprehend, identify, and employ skills in debate, writing, verbal and nonverbal communication, listening, public presentations, teamwork and collaboration, conflict management, and professional interaction.
  • A thorough comprehension of the nature, function, scope, delineations, and history of the communication discipline.
  • An ability to identify, differentiate, analyze, and modify major communication theories, as well as formulate original theoretical creations.
  • An ability to comprehend and differentiate major research paradigms, and the ability to propose and conduct original communication research.
  • An ability to translate communication knowledge into applied contexts, policies, projects, interventions, or presentations.
  • An ability to apply multiple perspectives towards self-understanding, in relation to your own and others’ (co)cultures, group affiliations, and identities.
  • An ability to identify relevant evaluative criteria and apply them competently to self-reflection, ethical progress, and actual or envisioned communication situations and/or scenarios.

Upon graduation, you’ll receive the same valuable degree as SDSU’s on-campus students — a B.A. in Applied Arts and Sciences in Communication from San Diego State University.

What’s An Applied Arts And Sciences Degree?

In order to earn a B.A. in Applied Arts and Sciences degree from San Diego State University, you’ll need to satisfy the Mathematics Competency Requirement. To satisfy this requirement, you’ll need to complete three semesters of college mathematics or a statistical sequence, such as

  • STAT 250 - Statistical Principles and Practices
  • STAT 350A - Statistical Methods
  • STAT 350B - Statistical Methods

or

  • SOC 201 - Elementary Social Statistics
  • SOC 406 - Intermediate Social Statistics
  • SOC 407 - Survey and Experimental Research Methods

You can satisfy the Mathematics Competency Requirement with coursework completed before applying to SDSU. You can also complete the required coursework by enrolling in additional courses once you’ve been admitted to the program. Please contact your admissions advisor for more details.

How to Apply

If you are a current or former student from a participating community college and have completed the minimum unit requirement (60 semester/90 quarter), you can complete our interest form and we will be in touch with you about requirements and next steps to apply.

In order to apply, please follow these three steps:

  1. Fill out form to the right (below on mobile), then
  2. Fill out the Cal State Apply application here
    1. Navigate to the "Apply" page
    2. Select a Term to Apply For
    3. Create your Account
    4. Complete your Profile
    5. Select the program you want to apply for
      • Select the Campus (San Diego State),
      • Start Term (for which you are applying for), and
      • Source (Extended Education).
    6. When asked for a major, select the correct program, e.g.
      • Business Administration - General Business (Online)
      • Communication (Online)

*A $70 nonrefundable application fee is required of all applicants at the time of application.

 

To successfully complete the program and earn your degree, you’ll need to complete all required units of coursework. You'll need to complete any remaining lower division CSU and General Education requirements externally before graduation at SDSU (with the exception of approved bridge courses that are offered internally at SDSU Global Campus). Once admitted, please refer to your degree evaluation to determine if there are any remaining degree requirements listed in the SDSU General Catalog for your major, as well as requirements outlined in your degree evaluation.
